Jan. 25: The Situation with the Gith

How classic D&D character races are being recategorized in the upcoming Monster Manual. Also, AI in the Ennies? Say it ain't so.

Welcome to the Friday edition of Critical Hit News, our twice-weekly sampling of the TTRPG stories of the week.

Wizards of the Coast

  • Gith are now abominations and goblins are fey. Changes like this are small things in the Monster Manual, but they do have an impact on how certain spells work, such as ‘Hold Person.’ It is unclear how it affects the player options in the 2024 rules going forward but could have some interesting implications.

  • The monster-themed board game Horrified is getting a D&D edition.

Major Publishers

  • Where’s Chaosium going next? Rascal News interviewed its VP about its past, future and present.

  • Demiplane, the D&D character sheet alternative, confirmed that it intends to host Fallout the RPG on its website. It is also in early stages of testing for Cyberpunk Red. No dates established for when it will be good to go.

Crowdfunding Launches

Sword Opera is a Kickstarter TTRPG filled with “melodrama and violence” and was compared to Shakespeare writing a crime drama. It’s a game based on the Blades in the Dark ruleset and seems pretty fun.

The grimdark publisher Exalted Funeral is bringing its website Glumdark to book form. The website’s best known for its random RPG tables of weird and macabre stuff.

TTRPG Technology

Tales of Fablecraft, the easy-to-learn game-based TTRPG, now supports homebrew battlemaps made by apps like Dungeon Alchemist and Inkarnate, allowing for further customization of campaigns.

The r/DnD and r/RPG subreddits have agreed to ban links to Twitter/X due to its owner, Elon Musk, performing a Nazi salute.

The Ennies, the TTRPG community’s most noteworthy awards, got pressure this week after people noticed that it allowed AI-generated content to be submitted. That content won’t be treated the same. For example, a book that has a human-created cover and AI-generated content can be judged based on the cover, but not on the AI content. The company claims this policy has been in place as of last year. The company intends to address these issues, but it seems likely there won’t be a ton of change.

I’m currently in the phase of redesigning and updating this newsletter, so do let me know what would help you most going forward! Thank you so much.
