Nov. 16: Never Stop Blowing Up at Home

Dimension 20's ruleset comes to your table, and Tusk Love is a real novel!

Welcome to the Saturday edition of Critical Hit News, our twice-weekly sampling of the TTRPG stories of the week. This week’s a short issue, with a focus on how Dimension 20 is bringing its custom ruleset to players and the introduction of an iconic Critical Role novel.

Major Publishers

  • Modiphius’ Star Trek Adventures is releasing a new Starter Set in January to help people get into Second Edition. It’s got a 3-part adventure, pregen characters and al the works. Honestly a good addition for players interested in the sci-fi setting.

  • There’s an interesting bit of drama in between publishers over how to handle competitors. Currently, Kobold Press, best known for its third-party 5e content, published a blog post comparing the new 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide to its Tales of the Valiant Game Master’s Guide. (ToV is, for the most part, a 5e clone with Kobold’s twist on the mechanics.) The blog post was a bit aggrandizing and slamming the DMG for a variety of reasons to promote Kobold’s own books. This annoyed some fans on TTRPG forums, who slammed the post. The company later published a response apologizing for the post and stating that they’d focus on “lifting up” companies in the industry over putting them down. They also said they’d leave reviews to fans and the press.

Crowdfunding Launches

  • As stated in the earlier issue this week, Mothership successfully raised enough funds for all 21 projects on Backerkit, a massive expression of support for the platform. The game has raised more than $670,000 as of Nov. 16.

  • RIFTS FOR SAVAGE WORLDS, a new book for the ruleset that explores the world of Europa, successfully raised enough funds. The book offers a sourcebook, maps, archetypes, and tools for Savage World players to enjoy. The art looks like a mish-mash of fantasy, sci-fi and horror.

  • The Monstrous Menagerie II was released by Morrus, a UK publisher and the people behind EN World. There is a plethora of new monster options for players to consider.

  • Satzija's Tome of Hags - A Witchcraft Compendium is a collection of new options offering 5e DMs new hags to consider adding to their game.

  • Alchemicals is a supplement for Exalted Third Edition, a game about heroes touched by the divine with a focus on more steampunk/mechanical characters.

Actual Play and Content Creation

Universus, the card game publisher, is teaming up with Critical Role to release Heroes of Exandria, a card game celebrating the Actual Play’s 10th anniversary. I really don’t know much about what UniVersus is but seems like a fun addition for the game. The game will be available on March 7, 2025.

Tusk Love, the meme-worthy romance novel that was introduced in Campaign 2 of Critical Role and has remained a constant, will exist now! The novel, which tells the story of a merchant daughter falling for a half-orc adventurer, will be available in May 2025.

Never Stop Blowing Up, the ruleset that Dimension 20 adapted in partnership with Kids on Bikes publisher Hunters Entertainment, is now available as its own independent ruleset on Dropout’s store for players to try for themselves.

What are your thoughts on Never Stop Blowing Up coming to your table? Would you play it?
